Spiritual Direction for Church Leaders
You’re a pastor, chaplain, teacher, church executive, president/vice-president, or CEO. You carry weighty responsibilities as a Christian leader. Your decisions have far-ranging consequences. Other people depend on you. And you know that without God’s help, your work falters. To carry out your responsibilities well, you want to stay in regular contact with God. Yet you realize that with the demands of work, church, home, and community, you and God sometimes fail to connect.
Spiritual direction may be for you. It's a confidential relationship where you receive help to recognize the urgings of God in you and around you, receive God’s loving initiatives, and respond to God in life-giving ways. Since God is everywhere, these loving initiatives are always coming your way. But first you have to recognize them before you can respond to them. Spiritual direction can is a way to cooperate with God's mission. The word “direction” does not mean that I give you directions or orders. Instead it means that you and I join together in looking for the direction (or mission) that God is birthing in you and around you. You can bring to spiritual direction your inner life of prayer, your sense of mission and service, discernment for major decisions, joys and laments, inspirations and glimmers of possibility. Spiritual direction can strengthen your relationship with God. As a result, your work, mission, and intimate relationships can become more satisfying. More Christians are discovering the value of meeting with a spiritual director. “Dan Schrock is a gifted spiritual director. He is well trained both intellectually and spiritually. He is a voracious reader and brings much knowledge to his role as spiritual director. He has immersed himself in the ancient practices and traditions of spiritual development and thus brings the wisdom of the ages. We are equals and thus I am empowered to work at transformation. Dan focuses on wholeness rather than brokenness." “Dan has been more of a guide than a director. His quiet presence, simple but probing questions, occasional observations, and loving spirit has been an important part of my mid-life journey. He has helped me look for the susurrations of God—the almost imperceptible rustling of God’s Spirit that brings light, healing, and hope. I continue on the journey with a trusted guide."
